Common Name: Sweet Bay Magnolia
Scientific Name: Magnolia virginiana
Description: The lovely native sweetbay magnolia features creamy-white blooms with a light, lemony scent. Sweetbay magnolia blooms sporadically throughout the summer, followed by cone-like fruits that are aggregates of follicles. When the follicles split open in late summer, scarlet seeds that attract birds are exposed. Sweetbay magnolia grows as a small tree with semi-evergreen leaves that have silvery-green undersides.
